Data Privacy

The world that we live in today is centered around technology and the data that we obtain from it. For the last decade data privacy has been an issue for many people on different platforms and websites. In this article, I learned that it is not the action of sharing people's private information that is viewed as the "crime." However, the main problem in the people's eyes is that these companies and websites have not received their customers' consent to share the information. The solution the article presents is the privacy assistant. The way this assistant would work is that it would be an automated checkbox that would pop up on every website that would gather data on you and you would check whether or not you give consent to share information or not. Personally, I believe that this feature should be installed in almost every platform. There are companies that get the consent from the customer, but most of the time they get it from a long terms and agreement document. In reality, most people do not read what is in the terms and agreement so they usually just agree with what is written. This causes a dispute when their information has been shared but they agreed to the terms so there is not much to be done. If we can import the privacy assistant on most platforms I believe many privacy issues will be solved. I believe that this is the best way to protect people's information because it is clear and concise. Instead of a large document it will simply be a question if they would like their information to be private or not. I also believe that this is beneficial to both parties. Speaking for myself, I know that when I see terms of agreement I immediately agree because I do not want to read all of the conditions. However, making the privacy terms separate from the other terms would have a huge impact. Why? Because platforms will be clearly asking to the users whether or not they want to keep their personal data private. For the users it will make things clearer to what they are agreeing with. Ultimately, I believe the privacy assistant on browsers will have only a positive effect on the world of data. There will be much less confusion for the users because they are actually acknowledging the privacy terms. It is time that people have full control of the data that is being collected on them.

  1. I agree with you that there should be a privacy assistant on every website. Most cites that collect data tell you that you must agree to use cookies which collect data about your habits. While I do think that making a separate privacy agreement could increase people’s awareness of what they are agreeing to, I think most people will still just click “accept” for the privacy agreement. The reason for that is that you may not be able use a website or service if you do not agree to their terms. With this in mind, I think privacy issues will continue that same way they have. I agree that there will be much less confusion about how the data is used, however I think it will have very little effect on how people decided what services or websites to use. Unfortunately, companies are becoming increasingly reliant on data and I do not think they will create and agreement where they are not using your data in some way. Data is needed to stay competitive and companies will use any piece of information they can get to gain an advantage.
